The Versant 4-Skills Test evaluates your reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English.

It is used to apply for jobs with companies like Amazon and Deloitte, as well as other multi-national corporations (MNCs) like Hilton, Delta, and KPMG.

What are the 4 Skills?

Reading, writing, listening, and speaking in the English language are the four skills that are assessed on this exam.

What are the parts of the 4-Skills Versant?

The exam has the following parts:

Part A – Repeat the sentence. You will hear 16 sentences and will need to repeat each one in the time allowed.

Part B – Sentence Builds. You will hear groups of words that are in an incorrect order. You will need to say the sentence or question with the words in the correct order. There are eight questions in this part.

Part C – Conversations. You will hear twelve brief conversations, and each one will be followed by a listening comprehension question. You will need to answer the questions with a couple of words or a brief phrase.

Part D – Sentence Completion. There will be 18 sentences, and each one will be missing a word. You will need to put the correct word in each sentence in the time permitted.

Part E – Dictation. This involves listening to 14 sentences and writing them down exactly as you have heard them.

Versant English Speaking Test

The Versant Speaking Exam is used by call centers to see if you have the correct level of speaking skills in order to communicate with customers on the telephone.

What’s on the English Speaking Versant?

The English speaking version of the Versant includes 6 parts:

Part A – Read aloud. In this section, you will see 12 sentences that you need to read aloud.

Part B – Repeat. There will be sixteen sentences in this part. You will hear each one and need to repeat it exactly as it was spoken.

Part C – Questions. This part consists of 25 basic questions that you will need to answer with a few words.

Part D – Sentence Builds. Like the 4-Skills version of the Versant, you will hear jumbled words in this part that you will need to re-order to form correct sentences.

Part E – Story Retelling. You will hear three brief stories, and you will need to verbally summarize each one, using your own words.

Part F – Open Questions. These will be thought-provoking questions. You will need to briefly state your opinion on each one.

Versant Student Placement Test

The Versant Student Placement Test has the following nine sections.

Part A – Read Aloud

You will be allowed 30 seconds to read a passage as clearly and naturally as you can, using good intonation and pronunciation.

Part B – Repeat

You will need to repeat the sentences or questions that you hear. You should repeat the sentence exactly as it is spoken, word for word.

Part C – Sentence Builds

This is similar to the same section on the 4-skills test. You will hear words or groups of words in an incorrect order. You need to put the words in the correct order and say the sentence into the micophone.

Part D – Conversations

Brief conversations between two people are followed by a short simple question. Respond to the question with a brief phrase of no more than four words.

Part E – Typing

You will see a passage on the screen, and you will need to type as much of it as quickly and correctly as you can in one minute.

Part F – Sentence Completion

This is identical to the same section on the 4-Skills test. You will see sentences with a missing word, and you need to put in the word to complete the sentence.

Part G – Dictation

You will have 25 seconds to type each sentence exactly as it is spoken on the recording.

Part H – Passage Reconstruction

Again, this is identical to the same section on the 4-skills test. You will have 30 seconds to read a passage, and then 30 more seconds to write a summary of it in your own words.

Part I – Summary and Opinion

You will read a short opinion piece. You then need to write two responses to the piece: a brief 50-word summary and another 50-word response stating whether you agree or disagree with the author’s opinion.
